Tourism WA Experience WA

Experience WA was originally developed alongside Sydney based agency, HOST, and Tourism Western Australian for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and Royal visit in 2011.

Using Host’s creative concept, functional scope and UI designs, Adapptor developed a multi-platform architecture, integrating multiple data sources to give users access to more than 7,000 places to see, explore, eat, drink and stay across the whole of Western Australia.

Tourism App

Experience WA was designed to provide visitors to Western Australia with the ability to discover things to do and places to see while in the state all from their smart phone. Not only did it store the data locally so it could be searched offline, it also had bespoke offline maps purpose built from data provided by Landgate’s SLIP service.

After supporting the original app for several years, Adapptor worked with Tourism Western Australia to re-imagine and rebuild the app for modern travellers in 2017.

In the 6 years since the original app launched mobile apps had become ubiquitous, and people were now travelling with their smartphones. Many expected to be able to access local information while on their travels around the world. With this in mind, we designed an app that could be connected all the time, and leveraged the intelligence of the device and additional 3rd party data to provide smart personalised results.

We developed a custom cloud based server application that integrates directly with the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) via a JSON API and the Dark Sky weather service for up to the minute weather data. A custom server application was written in Go leveraging Firebase and Big Query plus natural language processing to learn user preferences and personalise results.

Content is rendered to custom iOS and Android apps developed using the React Native framework.

"With so many international and local visitors coming to WA over the next few weeks, there isn’t a better time to launch this new free smartphone app. So many people use their smartphones now for real time interactions with the places they visit and rely on apps to give them good advice on where to go and what to see that suits their personal interests."
