HBF Fitness

HBF is one of Australia’s largest not-for-profit health insurance organisations, providing health, car, travel, home and contents insurance to over 900,000 members. Currently focusing on a national strategy, HBF is looking to become a health partner to its members.

Each year, HBF conduct their branded Run for a Reason event. This year saw over 30,000 participants and raised over $1.3 million for charity.

HBF’s ‘Health and Wellness’ team came to us at the end of 2014 to explore digital concepts to engage ‘Run for a Reason’ event participants by using wearable technology.

Working with our friends at Hatchd, we conducted market research and analysis into best practices of other digital incentive health programs around the world, and investigated the state of wearable technology for health. We provided HBF with a top-level solution that included a mobile app and digital incentives concept, designed as a health and wellness platform upon which HBF could release future digital products.

Happy with the recommendation, HBF requested our team scope and plan the service. This included a native iOS and Android app that suggested a training schedule for event participants and provided incentives to motivate users by tracking progress and delivering rewards. HBF could also manage a collection of tips and messages to be sent to people using the app throughout the training period to add inspiration and personalisation.

A comprehensive web service that initially allowed simple rewards based on a contribution to charity was also included as part of the scope. But the service was designed to be extensible and grow to a larger rewards program to use across HBF’s entire business, providing a result that was cost effective and scalable over time.
